Power Supply and Power Cord Use WARNING Do not hold the power plug with wet hands. Do not disconnect/connect the plug while your hands are wet. Failure to follow this warning may cause an electric shock. Do not remove or defeat the ground prong on the power cord. This equipment has a 3-wire and grounded power code.

Notes on Installing and Accessing the Rack Cabinet CAUTION Do not carry or install the rack only by a single person. More than one person is required to carry or install the rack. Failure to follow this instruction may cause the rack to fall and result in personal injury and/or breakage of surrounding devices.

CAUTION Elevated Operating Ambient If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature (Tma) specified by the manufacturer.

Do not use any unauthorized interface cable. Use only interface cables provided by NEC and locate a proper device and a proper connector before connecting a cable. Using an authorized cable or connecting a cable to an improper destination may cause a short circuit, resulting in a fire.

WARNING Do not close the ventilation hole. Do not close fan or the front ventilation hole at the back of the Device Expansion Unit. Otherwise, its internal temperature will rise to cause malfunctions or a fire. The Device Expansion Unit contains some components that are only good for a limited period of time and require replacement, such as the internal fan module and power unit. For stable operation of the Device Expansion Unit, NEC recommends you replace these components on a regular basis. Consult with your sales agent for replacement or the product lives.

During Operation CAUTION Do not pull out or remove the Device Expansion Unit from the rack. Do not pull out or remove the device from the rack while the device is running. In addition to causing equipment to not function properly, separating the device from the rack may result in personal injury.

Warning Labels The warning label is attached to components that have possible danger or their vicinity in the Device Expansion Unit to inform the user that a hazardous situation may arise when operating the chassis (do not take off or stain any label). If you find any label unattached, starting to come off, or stained, or the warning is illegible, contact your sales agent.

Follow this measures below to avoid a failure caused by static electricity when installing or uninstalling any optional device. ● Wearing Anti-static Wrist Strap Or Anti-static Gloves Wear a wrist strap on your wrist and connect the wire to the chassis. If there is no wrist strap, touch an unpainted metal surface of the chassis connected to the ground to discharge static electricity from your body before touching the component.

In the 1-power configuration at the shipment or the redundant power configuration, the powers of all NEC Express Servers connected with the Device Expansion Unit must be turned off in order to turn off the power of the Device Expansion Unit. However, in the 2-power configuration, the power of each power unit may be turned on/off independently.
2. Names and Functions of Components The names of components in the Device Expansion Unit are described below. FRONT VIEW Top cover The top cover protects the top of the Device Expansion Unit. IMPORTANT: The power of the Device Expansion Unit cannot be turned on/off by turning on/off the power of the NEC Express Server connected with the Device Expansion Unit. To turn on/off the power of the Device Expansion Unit, set the DC power switch on the rear face of the Device Expansion Unit to ON/OFF.

LED1 turns green when the power unit in the Device Expansion Unit is turned on. After connecting the Device Expansion Unit to NEC Express Servers through SAS cables, set the DC power switch on the rear face of the Device Expansion Unit to ON and turn on the powers of the NEC Express Servers.

3. Installation and Connections of Device Expansion Unit This section describes the installation and connections of the Device Expansion Unit. INSTALLATION Install the Device Expansion Unit in a standard EIA 19-inch rack assembly. Installation Procedure ∼ NEC Rack/Third Vendor Rack ∼ The Device Expansion Unit can be installed in a proper NEC or third vendor rack. The installation procedure is described below. 1. Remove the inner rails from the rack rails, attach the inner rails to the Device Expansion Unit with a M4 Millimeter Screws.

For any NEC rack, round stamps are put in the unit of 1U. Locate the rack rail so that a stamp is placed at the center of the outer rail.

Do not extend more than one device out of the rack. 1. After confirming that the power of the NEC Express server is set to OFF, disconnect the power cable and SAS cable connected to the Device Expansion Unit.

2. Loosen the two front knobs. 3. Grasp the handle and pull out the Device Expansion Unit from the rack slowly and carefully. The Device Expansion Unit clicks to be latched. 4. Pull out the Device Expansion Unit from the rack slowly with the right and left release levers pressed to release the latch.
Express Server is provided on the rear of the Device Expansion Unit. Turn off the power of the NEC Express server, pull out the power plug of the server from the AC outlet, and connect the SAS cable to the server. After connecting the Device Expansion Unit to the NEC Express server through the SAS interface cable, insert the power plug of the NEC Express server and that of the Device Expansion Unit into AC outlets.

SAS cable. (See page 41.) Connect the Device Expansion Unit to the NEC Express server after turning off the power of the NEC Express server. If the Device Expansion Unit is connected to the NEC Express server with the power of the NEC Express server being on, a malfunction or fault may occur.
Set the Power switch to OFF. Turn off the powers of all the NEC Express servers (up to two servers) to which the Device Expansion Unit is connected with the Power switch being ON. IMPORTANT: Turning on/off the power of an NEC Express Server connected with the Device Expansion Unit cannot make the power of the Device Expansion Unit turned on/off together.
IMPORTANT: The user can install or remove any option in or from the Device Expansion Unit. If so, NEC assumes no liability for any damage of the Device Expansion Unit and any components and the results from the system operation. It is recommended to ask a...
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Always observe the following cautions to install or remove any option in or from the Device Expansion Unit safely. WARNING Observe the following instructions to use the Device Expansion Unit safely. Failure to follow these instructions may result in death or serious personal injury. See the description on pages vi through xvii for details.
ANTI-STATIC MEASURES The most electric components in the Device Expansion Unit are composed of electric parts easily affected by static electricity. In the installation or removal of the Device Expansion Unit, take sufficient note so that it may be damaged by static electricity. Wear a wrist strap (as arm band or anti-static glove).
1. Shut down the OS in the NEC Express server. 2. Turn off the power of the NEC Express server. Refer to the User’s Guide of the NEC Express server for turning off the power of the server. 3. Unplug the power cord of the NEC Express server and that of the Device Expansion Unit from power outlets and then disconnect the SAS interface cable.
The 5.25-inch device bay in the Device Expansion Unit includes four slots in which backup devices such as magnetic tape drives are installed. IMPORTANT: Do not use 5.25-inch devices unauthorized by NEC. If an unauthorized third party’s device is installed in the Device Expansion Unit, the unit itself may be failed as well as the 5.25-inch device.

Installation Install a 5.25-inch device in the Device Expansion Unit in the following procedure. NOTES: Install 5.25-inch devices authorized by NEC. 1. See the section "Preparing for Installation and Removal" to prepare. (See page 26.) 2. Pull out the Device Expansion Unit from the rack.

NOTE: Insert a 5.25-inch device of the auto-changer type into the device bay without cable biting until the device clicks after the connection of the SAS interface and power cables within the Device Expansion Unit. This procedure allows the work to be easier.
