To conserve energy, your computer is set to enter the low-power Suspend Mode which shuts down the system and display within 15 minutes of inactivity in AC power mode. NB 100 Series Key operation Some operations require you to simultaneously use two or more keys. We identify such operations by the key top symbols separated by a plus sign (+). For example, Ctrl + C means you must hold down Ctrl and at the same time press C.

The Grand Tour AC adaptor The AC adaptor converts AC power to DC power and reduces the voltage supplied to the computer. It can automatically adjust to any voltage from 100 to 240 volts and to a frequency of either 50 or 60 hertz, enabling you to use the computer in almost any region.

NB 100 Series Indicator glows Wireless communication hot keys are on. Wireless LAN is turned on by an application. If you used the Task Bar to disable Wireless LAN, restart the computer or follow the procedures below to enable the system to recognize Wireless LAN.

NB 100 Series Heat dispersal To protect from overheating, the CPU has an internal temperature sensor. If the computer’s internal temperature rises to a certain level, the cooling fan is turned on or the processing speed is lowered. You can select whether to control the CPU temperature by turning on the fan first, then if necessary, lowering the CPU speed.
The Keyboard Chapter 5 The Keyboard The computer’s keyboard layout is compatible with a 104/105-key enhanced keyboard. Pressing Fn key an other keys can execute all enhanced keyboard function. Soft keys: Fn key combinations The Fn (function) is unique to Toshiba computers and is used in combination with other keys to form soft keys. Soft keys are key combinations that enable, disable or configure specific features.
The Keyboard Press Fn + F12 (Scroll Lock) to lock the cursor on a specific line. The power on default is off. Press Fn + Enter to simulate Enter on the enhanced keyboard’s numeric keypad. Press Fn + Ctrl to simulate the enhanced keyboard’s right Ctrl key.

The Keyboard Output Pressing Fn + F3 changes the active display device. Mute Pressing Fn + F6 turns sound on or off. When you press these hot keys, the current setting will be displayed as an icon. Power and Power-up Modes Monitoring battery capacity Remaining battery power can be monitored in Power Options. Wait at least 16 seconds after turning on the computer before trying to monitor the remaining operating time. The computer needs this time to check the battery’s remaining capacity and to calculate the remaining operating time, based on the current power consumption rate and remaining battery capacity.

Also do not drop, hit or otherwise apply impact; do not scratch or break the casing and do not twist or bend the battery pack.

A pin or similar object can damage the computer's circuitry. ■ Make sure the SD/MS/MS Pro Card is oriented properly before you insert it. ■ Memory Stick Duo/PRO Duo and the Memory Stick adaptor are not compatible with the bridge media card slot.

All readers should become familiar with this chapter. Knowing what might go wrong can help prevent problems from occurring.

Glossary analog signal: A signal whose characteristics such as amplitude and frequency vary in proportion to (are an analog of) the value to be transmitted. Voice communications are analog signals. ANSI: American National Standards Institute. An organization established to adopt and define standards for a variety of technical disciplines. For example, ANSI defined the ASCII standard and other information processing requirements.

Glossary byte: The representation of a single character. A sequence of eight bits treated as a single unit; also the smallest addressable unit within the system. cache memory: High speed memory which stores data that increases processor speed and data transfer rate. When the CPU reads data from main memory, it stores a copy of this data in cache memory.

Glossary components: Elements or parts (of a system) which make up the whole (system). Composite Video (YUV): A standard video signal used to transmit images, e.g. from a VCR to a TV. computer program: A set of instructions written for a computer that enable it to achieve a desired result.

Glossary disk drive: The device that randomly accesses information on a disk and copies it to the computer’s memory. It also writes data from memory to the disk. To accomplish these tasks, the unit physically rotates the disk at high speed past a read-write head. disk storage: Storing data on magnetic disk.

(FDD): An electromechanical device that reads and writes to floppy diskettes. Fn-esse: A TOSHIBA utility that lets you assign functions to hot keys. folder: An icon in Windows used to store documents or other folders. format: The process of readying a blank disk for its first use. Formatting establishes the structure of the disk that the operating system expects before it writes files or programs onto the disk.
